of a little less exciting nature

It turned to winter literally overnight here, which is what it did in a number of places it sounds like this week! We went from 75F to 35F overnight and it's not going back up. I'm enjoying figuring out how to keep warm - especially in our uninsulated icebox of a house where we often can be found wearing 5 layers and scarves at any given moment...oh well, it's not as bad as it could be. And there's definitely cozy corners to be found and lots of warm roommates with whom to cuddle. I think I'll find some secret pleasure in enduring this bitter midwest cold...at least once anyway.

So as some of you already know, I spent Thanksgiving here in Kansas City and decided to stay home and cook and enjoy the holiday alone. I shared the morning with a couple roommates and we enjoyed a breakfast of banana/walnut/chocolate chip pancakes and egg english muffins w/ cheese. We tried to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but were disappointed to find them interviewing cheesy stars and showing us concert clips of country music artists! So instead we watched my favorite love story of all time - Wuthering Heights - in all its dramatic, tragic, passionate, ridiculous glory. I love it.

Then, my roommates left for their thanksgiving dinner. It was finally time to put my 5.5lb baking hen in the oven for a couple hours. I spent those hours calling family and enjoying every bit of the smell that began pouring from the oven. I listened to Sufjan Stevens Christmas albums and got dressed for the occasion. I treated myself to a predinner snack of the apple pie that I had made earlier!! When the time got closer I got some mashed potatoes mashed, a yam steamed, some aspargus and brussel sprouts boiled, my roommate's stuffing heated, made a salad and pulled my fresh whole berry cranberry sauce out of the fridge... mmmmmm! And I prepared to feast. It all got a little cold while I took some pictures of the spread (which I will post soon). As I sat before that beautiful meal I spent a few moments before giving thanks for my family and friends and the memories, love and beauty that make up my life. I remembered my dad and the last thanksgiving I shared with him before he died 11 years ago. He and my brother and I had gone to a friends house for dinner. My mom was out of town to be with my grandma, EG, so it was just the three of us. Later I accompanied my dad as his date to a neighbor's house for dessert. One of my last and most precious memories with him.

And on to the food...the bird was amazing delicious, the cranberry sauce! Everything was tasty! I even made a little gravy from the bird juice. MMMmmmM! It was a really special evening. I realized that I should treat myself to dates like that more regularly.

Then just before digging into my second piece of pie my roommates came home and enjoyed it with me!

I hope you all had such an enjoyable Thanksgiving as well.

Sounds nice =) I'll try to blog about my Thanksgiving Dinner soon. It went well. I totally lied when we went around and said what we were thankful for though. What came out of my mouth was something like, "I'm thankful we're in Australia." Actually though, I feel like I miss the whole world, as in everyone that's not here. Everyone everywhere else. I even miss England. However, I am thankful that God took us out of a difficult situation in England, and I do feel like he called us here. It'll just take time to settle. I love you Leigh!
