It's been a full week of studying and baby preparation and settling into my temporary home here in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. I admit, I am watching The Simpsons (ahh, it's so rare!) at the moment. But, yesterday my blog update got deleted! Urgh!! So, here I am trying again, distracted as I may be...
Rachel and Mark and little Kai (still in utero) are wonderful and tireless hosts. I've already met many of their delightful friends and am enjoying their beautiful view over the western horizon in this small town where they're only 5 minutes from everything and a stroll down the hill to the park. The weather is still a bit chilly, which was unfortunate on our day at the beach in Torquay (about an hour south from here). We just admired the surf and walked a local art fair before heading home. But, it's amazing to be here to anticipate summer...and the birth of their first baby! Rachel is beautifully 38+ weeks pregnant - due in about 2 weeks, so we suppose she could go any day now. It is really exciting to be a part of the preparations with hope that I'll get to be there for the delivery and to cuddle the little guy afterwards. It is really great to get some hands on experience to go along with all the book work I'm doing. Plus, Mark, in compliance for his new chiropractor job, is also studing for his Masters in Pediatrics and is already well educated in the sciences. So, along with Rachel's near mastery of everything pregnancy and birth I am learning a lot to say the least.
Just prior to coming to Australia, I spent a week in Fiji. I enjoyed my stay with a family I contacted through couchsurfers. It gave me a glimpse into the average family's life there. I also got to visit the southern coast for a couple days enjoying the blazing heat and endless ocean while relaxing in the hammocks on the beach. Here are a few pictures from my visit to Fiji:
