waste not, want not

My friend Corinna posted on her blog today her noble effort to salvage 15 lbs of carrots that were on the verge of going bad, after a roommate, not being able to pass up a good deal, bought a 20lb bag of 'em, determined to make carrot juice everyday... for eternity apparently... and lost steam about 5 lbs in. Corinna, by cooking and juicing and freezing, salvaged every last one for future use in breads, stews, juices etc. !!! Nice work Corinna!!

Here's my story. We have, in our household, every intention to compost, save and reuse any possible reusable container (yogurt containers and the like), recycle as much as possible etc. Sometimes we use these old yogurt containers to store compostable material in to later be taken outside to our 'compost' pile. (which, by the way, is in a very sorry state...due to recent freezing weather...neglect, ignorance etc.). There have been two such 'reused' yogurt containers on top of our microwave for an unknown length of time (determinable by mold growth, maybe?). I have been avoiding them for weeks probably (as have all of my other housemates), knowing that they are foul and we will not be able to, in good conscience, use the yogurt containers again for edible food nor recycle them (KC doesn't recycle #5). So, tonight, I did the sad and repulsive task of dumping these 2 containers of moldy sick disgusting rotting junk into a dry cold pile of crap in our back yard, reclosing the containers and throwing them in the garbage...the regular old garbage, having failed at every level...unless by some miracle of the midwest our compost heap actually turns into something like compost come summer... that will be a victory!

Yeah, Leigh!! way to take one for the team. hee hee. your story gave me a great picture of the things we do in our houses simply by default. My compost pile is definitely ready for some sun and warmth, too. Though I think its had more warmth than yours however not enough to get that good breaking down happening.
