Whitney Classic Fundraiser for Summit

August 2007

I have had aspirations for a long time that the bicycle would become my main form of transportation. But, until recently the most I had ridden consistently was a round trip of 6 miles, 3 times per week in a relatively flat urban neighborhood of San Diego for work. So, when I came to Bass Lake this summer to work as the cook for Summit Adventure, I was excited to ride more. And in fact there’s a lovely, hilly, 13 mile ride around the lake, beautiful weather and lots of motivated people! Then I heard about the Whitney Classic…a 135 mile ride from Death Valley (elevation 282’) up two 5,000’ passes through the night all the way to the Mt. Whitney Portal (8,365’) to raise money for Summit Adventure’s wilderness ministries. ‘Are you kidding?!’ I thought, ‘There’s no way… Okay, maybe on a team with some more experienced riders…but…I don’t know!’ Though, as I thought about it more, I realized how great it would be to not only begin working towards some of these bike riding goals that I have had for so long, but also to support Summit in their biggest fund raising effort of the year…and get in shape and have some fun along the way…all while training for the Kansas City Marathon in Oct., no less!!!

So, on September 29th at 12:00 noon I plan to join my team of threeà (Leslie, Leigh and Corinna after a 56 and 20 mile ride at Mammoth and June Lakes, CA!!) and about 40 other riders from all over the country for the 26th Annual Whitney Classic Bike ride!! In case you don’t know, Summit Adventure is a non-profit Christian organization, which utilizes the wilderness and adventure as an educational medium for challenging people of all ages and backgrounds towards spiritual, physical, emotional and relational growth. Many of the courses are for fathers and their teenage sons or daughters, which, for me, is a particularly special part of this ministry. Summit is also currently working towards expanding its programs with an integrative service and adventure semester program for college students.

If you would like to help me reach my goal of raising a minimum of $700 and support this unique ministry, please fill out the bottom portion of this letter and return it to Summit Adventure. The funds raised during this event will go towards Summit’s general fund, which includes programs for youth, families, schools, churches and individuals with disabilities. If you would like to ride, volunteer or experience and support Summit in other ways you are more than welcome. Please visit our website at www.summitadventure.com. If you’d like to contact me personally with questions or encouragement or whatever by mail, e-mail or a phone call, please don’t hesitate to do soJ.

Not only am I excited for this challenging ride, I have found Summit to be a beautiful place of Christian leadership, ministry and community and I’m thankful for an opportunity to support their ongoing efforts and I hope you will join me in doing so as well. Thank you so much in advance!

Peace to you on your journey,

Leigh Nottingham
