New Territory

I got woken this morning by a mosquito flying up my nose. A short while later I realized the little guy had spent some time snacking on my upper lip, making it swell into a terribly bloated state. I'm used to my skin reacting in such a manner to these obnoxious little creatures' blood thirsty cravings, but a big fat mosquito bit lip was a whole new experience. In any other circumstance I would have been disgusted, perturbed or somehow bothered...but, the fact is, I've kinda moved into their territory. Sleeping under a beautiful canopy of trees in the Sierra mountains just south of Yosemite National Park (where I am now working) during mosquito season makes such occurrences pretty much inevitable. We got a good laugh out of it...or my friend Leslie did at least. And finally now by mid-day it's returned to normal size. Sorry I don't have a picture to post...

I actually prefer to be woken by the sunlight bursting through the green leaves of that canopy of trees under which I now sleep. It was startlingly beautiful the first time I noticed it. Other than the seldom but creepy noise of rustling leaves in the dark night I really enjoy my new sleeping arrangements.

I also am enjoying the possibilities that have come with this new job! I have just started cooking for Summit Adventure - a small wilderness ministry in Bass Lake, CA. I have aspirations of baking a lot of bread and being creative with their stock of dried beans left over from someone's Y2K supply...yes, Y2K. So far, the folks I've cooked for here are excited about the food options I generally prefer - rice, curry, beans/burritos, salad, fruit, yogurt etc. woohoo!

On top of that, a jog by the lake is pretty much always in the schedule for the day, which has been a great start to my triathlon training. :) I am hopeful for a swim IN the lake soon, too. And, my bike should be coming to me in June along with some of my very good friends from San Diego.

So, things are looking up for the summer - definitely prime time for some lonely spells, but more than that I anticipate making some new friends and new memories and gaining some new outdoor and culinary skills...'cuz boys only want girlfriends who have great skills.

Ooh - here's a picture from my brother's graduation from the Pima Fire Academy...they demonstrated to family and friends some of their new firefighting skills - using a wide mist from the hose they approached the fire slowly which gently but steadily pushed the flames away in order to reach the nozzle to turn off the chemical leakage. It was really impressive. My bro is the one on the left!

Hey Leigh,

I wish I had known that you were in Bass Lake. I was in Fresno last week and even went to Yosemite on my last day in Calif. I was visiting for my sister LeAnn's graduation from Fresno State.

I have one memory of Bass Lake from when I was 13 and on my very first trip to a youth group retreat. We stayed in a village of cabins near the lake and hung out off of the floating dock. I have not been back since.

I like that photo, too of your brother. Sounds like he's a hero on a regular basis.

Leigh, you know how I hate to disagree with you. And I am impressed by your good natured attitude toward the mosquito that feasted on your face. I hate mosquitoes. They are evil little erratic bloodsuckers that spread so much disease. Maybe I am jealous because they are above us on the food chain. If I had three wishes, one would be peace on Earth, the second would be for all the mosquitoes to die (I don't even care about ecological ramifications) and the third would be a dinner party with Nelson Mandela, Willie Nelson, and you.

okay, I'm back. (I had to comment and say hi as soon as I found your blog; then I went and read all your entries- yes, all- and now I'm back. Here I am.)

First of all: I miss you. Second of all, I almost peed my pants with joy when I read your comment on my blog. I read it like three times because I was so excited. Third: I am really excited for the day when we all live in Nairobi and do things such as cook (you), deliver babies (still you), teach (me), and...hm, what is Kelly going to do? We still don't know.

I hope you have a good summer. I am going to be (hopefully) in San Diego in July, and I'm sad you won't be there. But soon, soon...
